Why does the entity business status show “No Status” or ‘’Unknown’’ and what does it mean?

This FAQ covers two distinct “No Status” / “Unknown” business status scenarios that may appear in the application: (1) a sole proprietorship with no CIPC registration, and (2) entities registered in countries without a formal business registry system. It explains the cause of each designation and the recommended steps to resolve or handle them.

FAQs

Q1: Why does the application show “No Status” and what does it mean?

A: The business in question operates as a sole proprietorship. The director, John Doe for example, is trading in their personal capacity and is not registered with the CIPC (Companies and Intellectual Property Commission).

This is why the system reflects a “No Status” designation—indicating that there is no valid registered business entity under that name or registration number.

Q2: What should I do next when I see the “No Status” designation?

A: We recommend the following steps:

1.Cancel the current application linked to the unregistered business.

2.Reinitiate the application under the individual profile of the director.

3.When prompted, search using the individual’s full name and ID number (as shown in the system) to validate the director’s information.

This ensures that:

•The proper checks are performed on the individual.

•You avoid the “No Status” designation caused by referencing an unregistered entity.

Q3: What does an “Unknown” business status mean?

A: This means that the business status of this particular entity is recorded as “Unknown.” The reason for this classification is that, in some countries, there is no centralised or formal business registry system equivalent to South Africa’s CIPC.

In such jurisdictions, business registration and status tracking may not be mandated by law or systematically maintained. As a result, there is no official or statutory source from which to verify the current operational status of the entity. This lack of formal infrastructure makes it difficult to determine whether the business is active, inactive, dissolved, or otherwise—hence the status remains “Unknown.”
